Haiti Earthquake Appeal - Two ways of supporting this appeal
1) Bishop Smith is in frequent contact with an Irish missionary Sister Mary Hardiman, who is a Holy Union Sister working in Haiti. The Bishop supports various projects run by Sister Mary, who is a native of County Galway and has a sister-in-law living in Dunderry parish. Sister Mary calls to Bishop Smith anytime she is in Ireland so as to update him on her work. If you wish to donate through Sister Mary, this office will ensure that the funds reach her directly.
2) Trócaire is working with "Caritas Haiti", which runs over 200 hospitals and medical centres in the country. They are skilled in the provision of clean water and sanitation which will be crucial in this response. Support can be given to Trocaire through the website Trocaire.org.

The old give way to the young. New thoughts sprout from fertile ground. While the New Year beckons us with many promises, don't forget to give the old year its due. Learn from past mistakes and carry the lessons of time with you. Here are some beautiful New Year quotes that teach you to celebrate each moment of life; yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. Edith Lovejoy Pierce

Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instil in us. Hal Borland

Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits. Anonymous

Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever. Mark Twain

Death of Cardinal Daly:

Cardinal Cathal Daly, a bishop for almost thirty years and Cardinal since 1990 died on New Year’s Eve in the City Hospital, Belfast, surrounded by his family. Cardinal Seán Brady led the tributes following Cardinal Daly’s death by pointing to the scale of his legacy in both ecclesiastical history and civil history, especially his contribution to peace in Northern Ireland. In a statement issued Thursday night, Taoiseach Brian Cowen said, “Cardinal Daly was a trenchant supporter of peace. He was a member of the New Ireland Forum and later the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation. He was an outspoken critic of those who used violence to achieve political objectives.” The Taoiseach also pointed to the contribution made by Cardinal Daly in securing the peace in Northern Ireland that exists today.

The Most Revd Alan Harper, OBE, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland issued a statement saying, “During the most challenging of times the Cardinal gave wise and courageous leadership both as Bishop of Down and Connor and subsequently as Archbishop of Armagh. He was a fearless and forthright champion of peace and justice, always speaking out unambiguously on community issues during the darkest days of the Troubles.” He went on to say, “I count it a privilege to have known him and send my sincere condolences to his family and share the sadness of all those whom he influenced for good in his life.

Cardinal Daly had taken ill in the last few days and was admitted to the coronary care unit of City Hospital where he died. Cardinal Daly's remains will arrive at Belfast's St Peter's Cathedral at noon on Saturday, January 2 where they will lie until Sunday at 5:30pm when they will arrive at St Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh. His funeral Mass will be at noon on Tuesday and he will be buried in the Cathedral grounds. May he rest in peace.
