Bishop Smith's message for Lent 2010:
Forty days of Lent began with Ash Wednesday and Bishop Smith is encouraging parishes to support the annual Trócaire appeal. “Reaching out to our brothers and sisters in need is a visible expression of faith”, the Bishop explains. Last weekend, the Diocesan Office received a surprise telephone call from Sister Mary Hardiman, who is working in Haiti. The Bishop’s appeal for help for Haiti has hit over € 200,000 and funds have already been sent to support Sister Mary’s projects on the ground. Much of her convent’s work in Haiti involves providing the homeless with the basic one meal a day, on which everyone survives. She says that the only aid reaching her area has come from various Irish charities. Trócaire continues to work in the country and Trocáire boxes will be distributed in many parishes and schools this week. Bishop Smith hopes that the forty days of Lent can be a time for reflecting on our spiritual lives. “The Sunday Gospels during Lent this year were written by Saint Luke, who highlights the sensitivity and compassion of Christ” says the Bishop. “There is a great gentleness in Jesus, who is totally in the business of lifting the burden of sin, not adding to it. Lent gives us an opportunity to humbly recognise our failings and to experience the gentleness of God.”

Statement from Bishop Smith: "Following the publication of the Murphy Report which highlights the serious mistakes made and the terrible suffering that too many children endured Pope Benedict invited the Irish Bishops to meet with him over two days in Rome. The Holy Father and nine senior Cardinals and Archbishops from the Curia were present for the meeting on Monday and up to lunchtime on Tuesday. By his and their presence they wished to emphasis the seriousness with which they view this evil which affects the life of the Church in Ireland and society worldwide. The meeting began with each of the Irish Bishops giving a five minute presentation on different aspects of the issue. In the afternoon the Cardinals and Archbishops from the Curia responded, taking up a number of the points made in the morning presentations. Pope Benedict did likewise. When these were completed discussion began on the draft of the letter that Pope Benedict will send to the Irish Church in the next few weeks. He listened attentively to comments and suggestions made by all present and will take these into account in finalising his letter. Contrary to some reports I found the meeting with Pope Benedict earlier this week to be the most open, honest and engaged meeting that I have attended. Some of the reports on this meeting misrepresent its purpose and content. Since the publication of its Framework document in 1996, setting down procedures for the processing of complaints, the Catholic Church in Ireland has constantly evaluated and reviewed our national policy and procedures for safeguarding children. In this diocese that has been done in complete cooperation with the HSE, seeking to ensure that best practice is in place. Lent invites us to repentance. Lent also has at its heart a deep message of hope, a hope rooted in the life, death and resurrection of Church. The Church must always take its teaching from the life and words of Christ, repenting when it has failed to do so."

Next Wednesday Feb the 17th we celebrate Ash Wednesday the beginning of the Season of Lent. Lent is a time for authentic conversion and for coming to know Christ as the bringer of justice. Our journey is towards him, justice as a human virtue is the consistent practice of giving every person what is due. In order to be satisfied in our deepest selves we need something more, something which only God can provide. This is a justice with a new dimension.

Lent is a time of many blessings, in fasting, prayer and thanksgiving. Lent is a wonderful opportunity to know anew and afresh the mystery and grace of God revealed in Christ Jesus. Lent is a time to return to God who loves us more than we love ourselves.
